Welcome to Ukraine
Ukraine is the second largest country in Europe after Russia. Its territory covers 603 thousand square kilometers. We can safely say that it is situated in the very heart of Europe. Ukraine is bordered on Poland, Slovakia and Hungary in the west; in the south- west by Romania and Moldavia; in the north Belarus and Russia. The southern frontiers are washed by the Black sea and the Sea of Azov.
The beauty of our country always attracts thousand of tourists from all over the world. The Crimean peninsular has been a tourist focus for hundreds of years. While Ukraine will always be associated with winter and snow in the minds of foreigners, Crimea actually boasts subtropical weather conditions for most of the year. Most of the cities resorts rest comfortably on a narrow cypress-strewn strip between the Crimean mountains and the Black Sea and are shielded from chilly north winds by majestic peaks. As a result the temperature rarely drops below freezing, even in the midst of the great Ukrainian winter, and from May to October the weather is splendid.
The Crimean south coast is lined with resorts and sanatoriums with the main "Greater Yalta"section running for 40 km around the town of Yalta itself. The holiday strip begins in Feodosia at the far eastern end of Crimea. Close by you will find the Kara-Dah nature reserve with its stunning rock formations, and Koktebel, the artists` colony famous for its cognac. Southern gem Sudak lies to the immediate west of Koktebel, and boasts impressive medieval fort in the world, while nearby Noviy Svet has the finest beaches in the whole of Crimea.
At the far western end of the Crimean coast lies Sevastopol. As well as great tourist attractions Crimea boasts a wealth of fresh fruits, which can be purchased along the roadside, as well as local honey and other healthy treats. Ukraine is a land of charming diversity. We invite you to see that all regions of our Motherland have their own particular attractiveness and beauty.
The capital and the largest city of Ukraine is Kiev. For a millennia and a half ago it has stood on the step hills over the grey Slavutich Dnieper. The ancient chroniclers called Kiev "the Mother of Russ towns".
Kiev has always played the most important role in the history of our country. The history of Kiev itself has reflected the whole history of our state. That is why there are a lot of memorial places and monuments, which you need to see.
The visitors of Kiev usually start the sightseeing tour with old town — Podol, where the city was founded. The Golden Gate — the main entrance to ancient Kiev brings us back to the times of Kyivan Rus. The St. Sofia Cathedral is a monument of history, architecture and monumental painting of early half of the 11 century. The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 as a cave church, now it is an active monastery and a museum of ancient Ukrainian art. There are many other museums and art galleries which you are to visit by no means. The world famous Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theatre, Ukrainian Drama Theatre and many other ones are always opened for everyone.
It is a great pleasure just to walk along the Kiev streets, especially Kreshchatic in the shadow of chestnut trees which even have become the symbol of the capital.
